Summertime Melon
What do you love about summer? Is it warmer temperatures, longer days, or exciting vacations? For me, it’s all that and the promise of plentiful, sweeter, and more delicious fruit. Although you can get some melons all year round, melon taste the best from May through September. Melons are a naturally sweet treat loaded with health benefits. My hope is that you’ll appreciate them more after reading this blog.
Watermelon
It’s the perfect summer fruit, sweet and juicy. Watermelon is 92% water and low in calories. One cup has only 46 calories. It is packed with antioxidants, vitamins A and C. Watermelon may reduce the risk of certain diseases, lower inflammation, and boost eye health. What is the secret to finding the perfect watermelon? Look for a butter, pale yellow spot which indicates where the watermelon rested as it grew. Also look for a dark and dull texture. There is nothing better than a barbecue with watermelon as dessert.
Honeydew Melon
Honeydew is a member of the musk melon family. It’s flavorful, nutritious, and only 64 calories in one cup. Honeydew is 90% water and provides vitamin C, potassium, and folate. It contains several nutrients that may support immune function, eye, skin, and bone health. How do you pick out a good honeydew melon? Press on the bottom of the melon, on the end opposite from where it’s attached to the vine. It should feel slightly soft or at least a little spongy. Honeydew is perfect for salads, yogurt or alone as a snack.
Cantaloupe
Cantaloupe is also a member of the musk melon family. It’s full of nutrients. Cantaloupe’s orange color indicates beta-carotene that is either converted to vitamin A or acts as a powerful antioxidant. One cup of cantaloupe contains over 100% of the recommended daily value of vitamin C. Cantaloupe may provide benefits for both eye health and your immune system. Need a little help choosing the right cantaloupe? Look for symmetry and a slightly heavy feel. The color should be creamy, light yellow to orange with little to no green. Cantaloupe can add color and flavor to the perfect breakfast meal.
