An Apple a Day….
Although it may feel like summer, subsequently fall will be arriving soon. I find it the perfect time for a road trip to an apple orchard. Apples are high in fiber and polyphenols which are plant compounds providing antioxidant effects. Depending on the variety, this fruit is great for snacking, baking, desserts and ingredients in salads and such.
Popular Varieties
Gala – robust apple, grown throughout the world all year round. It has a mellow, floral aroma and a simple sweetness with a hint of vanilla.
Granny Smith – known for the signature green color and very tart flavor. The Granny Smith is extra firm and holds shape well when being baked, especially in pies.
Honey Crisp – uniquely explosive, juicy and crisp fruit that has a distinctly sweet-tart taste. They can maintain their palatability for up to six months in refrigerated storage.
Pink Lady – premium, late season apple presenting a perfect vibrant, pink skin. It boasts a unique balance of sweet tart, while being crisp and refreshing.

Store apples in the refrigerator for a longer shelf life. Try one of my favorite recipes, Crockpot Applesauce. It can be frozen in Ziploc bags for later use, finally just thaw and serve warm or cold. Happy Autumn picking and enjoy!!!
